Packaging is a series of Powerpoints that form a Unit of Work that supports the teaching of Design, in particular Packaging. Packaging is aimed at developing the skills needed to understand the process of Packaging and how to design a suitable product that fits the needs of the consumer. The aim is for the pupils to study the process of packaging, use 3D shapes from nets, develop their own ideas and design a cereal packet. The aim of the lesson is to introduce students to a variety of different materials. Students will examine a number of common hardwoods, softwoods, manufactured boards, plastics, metals and compliant materials such as card. Students studying a resistant materials course will be expected to have a knowledge of woods, manufactured boards, metals and plastics whereas students choosing a product design course will study compliant materials such as card and paper in combination with one or two other resistant materials such as metal, woods or plastics.

The two activities in this lesson are designed to illustrate to pupils the main features of structures using sheet materials. The first activity shows the names of the main parts of a model house. The second enables teachers to show pupils how to join sheet materials simply. Teachers should introduce, explain and discuss the following words and concepts with pupils: door, window, floor, chimney, wall, stairs and roof. Both activities show a complete model first and teachers should discuss with pupils how to disassemble and then reassemble the product.
